Year 1 Learning

Academic Year 2024-2025

DT

In Year One we have been enjoying learning about foods that keep our bodies healthy and we are going to make a healthy fruit salad. We learned how to use a knife safely to chop and slice fruit in preparation for making our fruit salad.

Castles

We have been learning about castles in Year One and we visited Mount Fitchet castle. Mount Fitchet castle is a Motte and Bailey castle from the Medieval times. We enjoyed exploring the many parts of the castle, wandering in and out of the many houses and smelling the log fires and enjoying seeing the peacocks and hens. We climbed many towers and we could see wonderful views across the whole castle and we pretended to be on guard from the enemy! We had a lovely packed lunch and then enjoyed the coach trip back to school. It was a wonderful day!

Science Day

As part of Science Day, Year 1 thought about different animals and their habitats. We discussed the reasons why animals lived in certain habitats and how they changed to suite their homes. We then chose an animal and created our own habitats, thinking carefully about all of its features. We then had the opportunity to share what we had learnt in an assembly.

To conclude our Science Day, we took part in a Smoothie Workshop. We discussed how we can make sure we have a balanced diet and eat our five a day. We then got to choose different fruits to put into a smoothie and took it in turns to blend it by pedalling on a bike. We had a huge amount of fun, especially when we got to taste them at the end!

World Book Day

The children in Year 1 have really enjoyed joining in with all of our World Book Day activities. We came into school in our pyjamas and took part in a silent sponsored read for 30 minutes! We also designed our own book marks and book covers and were treated to biscuits and juice to finish our day!

Science -Animals and other mammals

In Year One, we were excited to have a chance to meet some new animals for our Science topic "Animals and other mammals". We held a cockroach, a python, a bearded dragon and a chinchilla. We  loved having the python around our neck and feeling it's smooth scales. We learned that the chinchilla has the softest fur of all the animals. It was interesting to stroke the Echidna's quills and learn that is sometimes known as a spiky anteater.
