Science Week

The children loved sharing their science learning with parents today. All the investigations and research was explained and demonstrated for our visitors. Thanks mums and dads for extra probing questions! Further investigations emerged as additional questions were asked. Well done 2.1 on some great science observations and thinking.

EventYear 2

Year 2 Science Week

As our topic is “Around The World,” during Science Share Week we have been thinking about vehicles or machines that travel. We have been exploring all sorts of toys, like parachutes, gliders, cars and balloon helicopters. After exploring the toys, children decided on questions they were interested in investigating. 2.1 also had to decide how they were going to answer their questions. They will be able to tell you about the sort of enquiries we carried out. So far we have compared how far cars can travel on different surfaces on a ramp, we have compared whether a glider can stay in the air longer than a balloon helicopter and we have also done some book and internet research to find out how things fly. Finally we compared whether a balloon could stay up in the air longer than a balloon with a propeller attached. Parents are welcome into Class on Friday at 3pm to find out more and this will give children the chance to share their science learning with you.

Year 2

France and Italy

Last week year 2 were lucky to have a presentation from Emile’s Mum, telling us all about life in France. We learned about the regions in France and how the weather can be quite similar to the UK. We got to sample some french bread and cheese. It was yummy.

Jacopo and Dante ‘s mums shared some authentic Italian food with us. We learned about many cities in Italy: Rome; Venice; Pisa and also what happened to Pompeii a long time ago.

We are looking forward to going even further around the world next week, when we go to Poland and Russia!

Year 2

Breadmaking

As part of our High Street topic, we visited Cherry Hinton High Street and popped into the baker’s shop. Did you know that our bread is baked at night while we are fast asleep? We also made our own bread and added a range of different ingredients. It tasted delicious! We wrote instruction so that others could also see how to make the perfect loaf.

Year 2

Fairytale Boxes

As part of our Fairy Tale topic, we planned designed and created Lauren Child inspired fairy tale rooms. We used Child’s mixed media collage style, which was so varied and exciting to do. We worked well in our groups and were pleased with the final products.

Year 2

Maths Measuring

In our Maths lessons, we have been getting to grips with all sorts of measuring. We have been finding out about different units of measure as well as which tools are best for which measuring jobs. We also found out that you have to be very accurate and careful and always start from zero!

Year 2

Literacy

A mystery suitcase arrived for us in school one day. When we looked inside, we saw lots of warm clothes, a compass, a very old camera and some tinned food. Bit by bit and with some careful questions and deductions, we found out that it belonged to Ernest Shackleton. We learned about his expeditions to Antarctica and his great survival and rescue story.

Year 2

Ice Science

In our Science lessons on Materials, as part of our Fire and Ice topic, we investigated the properties of ice and then designed and planned our own fair tests, depending on our interests. Some groups compared how quickly ice would melt in hands or in water, while others were interested to see if ice with food colouring would melt faster than normal ice.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March, all pupils at Queen Edith dressed up as animals! Look below at some of our lovely photos.

We all linked our English work to the book Welcome by Barroux. Reception children made their own islands inspired by those in the book. Year 1 designed a welcoming place for the monkeys from the story to stay in. Year 4 wrote inner monologues imagining that they were in that situation. Later Years pupils looked at Welcome and also Leaf, The Day War Came, The Island and The Arrival and found out about refugees around the world before writing diary entries, imagining that they were in that situation.

KS1 Christmas Production

KS1 have really enjoyed their Christmas production this year. “The INN-Spectors” was a comical performance with beautiful acting, singing and dancing. Congratulations to all the children for working so hard on learning lines, songs and dance moves. Thanks too to parents who supported the memory challenge and helped children every step of the way. The cast also looked stunning in their costumes, so thanks again to mums and dads for equipping us so well. Our many rehearsals paid off as the final show is one we can all be proud of.

Happy holidays to one and all!

Year 2

October Hansel & Gretel

On Wednesday 31st October, Year 2 and Year 6 enjoyed a wonderful performance of Hansel and Gretel by Pendle Productions. We were treated to lots of singing and dancing, a beautiful backdrop and two very energetic performers. It was interesting to discuss the differences in this retelling compared to the traditional tale in our classes afterwards. It was the perfect introduction to our current topic: Fairytales.
