Year 1

Maths

We have been practising identifying numbers and have enjoyed playing adding games with dice.

Year 1

Art

In art we are creating watercolour collages inspired by the work of Turner. So far we have painted a cloudy sky and a stormy sea. We were careful to use dark, stormy colours and to smudge the paint for the sky. We also experimented with salt on the sea to make the water look foamy.

Year 1

Class Council Assembly

In our class council assembly we have been thinking about how we can be proactive and make our classroom a friendly and inspiring place for everyone to be. Lots of us shared great ideas for ways to inspire and help our friends and visitors to our classroom.

Year 1

Maths

In maths we have begun exploring numbers up to and beyond 100. Today we compared two larger numbers and explained which one was bigger and how we knew. We were careful to use the words “ones” and “tens” to help us explain clearly.

Year 1

Art fruit and vegetable prints

We explored the shapes and textures of a variety of vegetables and fruits by making relief prints.

After that, we used oil pastels to create bright, contrasting and colourful backgrounds.

Year 1

Botanic Gardens

On a lovely, warm early summer’s day, we explored the Botanic Gardens! We drew detailed observational sketches of different plants in the glass houses and created a second journey stick as we travelled around. We noticed lots of details in the gardens as we completed our scavenger hunt. It was a fabulous experience for all and we are very thankful to our brilliant parent helpers!.

Year 1

DT Food and Nutrition

Although we eat fruit as an individual item at school every day, not all children have experienced a mixture of fruit as in a fruit salad. So we explored the possibility of lots of different tastes ‘all at once’ when we decided on a special mixture in a fruit salad.

First, we explored the sensory properties of fruit by tasting them and describing their colour, texture and taste.

After that, we discussed the health and safety issues when handling and tasting foods. We also practised using everyday cutlery as effective and versatile tools.

Then, we designed our fruit salads, thinking especially about the flavours, textures and colours we wanted to include.

Next it was time for the big task: the making. Each group made two identical bowls of fruit salad to share. They made sure that the look, feel and taste of the fruit salad matched what they planned.

Finally, we evaluated our fruit salads and thought about how we would have liked them to be different.

We all worked together brilliantly and practised thinking “win-win” to make sure that everyone was happy with each stage of our work!

Year 1

Identifying leaves

In Science we explored our school grounds using the woodland trust tree identification app. We had to observe different parts of each tree very carefully to help us identify it. We looked closely at the leaves, the branches, flowers and bark.

If you want to use the app at home you can find it here https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/identify-trees-with-our-tree-id-app/

Year 1

Identifying parts of a plant

We were very excited to welcome Robert Macfarlane into school to talk to us about trees. We were inspired by his passion and enthusiasm for plants and nature and learnt lots about swifts and horse chestnut trees.

We used our close observation skills to explore our school grounds and create a journey stick to remind us of our walk. We loved identifying the different items we collected and trying to work out which plant they had come from.

UncategorizedYear 1

R.E and Visitor

We had a great time exploring Christianity with our lovely visitor from a local church. We learnt about three different stories from the Christian bible and discussed how Jesus was a good friend to people around him. Then we explored whether it was easy or hard for Jesus to show friendship to others and refleted on times in our own lives when it can be easy or difficult to be a good friend.

Year 1

Seasonal Changes

We discussed how trees change throughout the year and described what the weather is like in our country in each season.

Year 1

We have been learning the difference between capacity and volume. We worked as a team to pour water and label cups with words and phrases like ‘nearly empty’ and ‘more than half full’.

Year 1

Science:

We have really enjoyed the start of our plants topic! We have been exploring our school grounds and investigating the different trees and plants. We used our observation skills to look closely at the leaves, bark, branches and flowers on the trees to help us identify them.

Year 1

Castles Day

From the very beginning of the day, the children imagined themselves living in a castle. Through role-play, they experienced life as it would have been during 1145, using authentic tools and materials. Throughout the day they were involved in the issues of the time and began to learn about lots of different aspects including
Making a leather finger guard to protect your fingers when doing archery
Rope-making and braiding wool to edge collars and cuffs
Working with the wise woman to dispense cures for a variety of illnesses
Making clay gargoyles for the great hall
Making a leather purse to store keepsakes
Creating scent bags to dispel the smells of the castle
Making a sample of woollen weaving

Throughout all this activity, there were knights and hunters outside, protecting the castle and hunting for food for our feast! They managed to hunt wild pig, rabbit and a large number of rats! They also managed to save the castle from the attack of the dastardly Sir Geoffrey!

To celebrate the defeat of the enemy and managing to defend the castle, the children joined in a huge banquet! Servants did a wonderful job of serving bread, cheese, fruit and biscuits to the knights and performers and everyone was entertained by jesters, singers, dancers and a jousting tournament.
What a wonderful day we will remember it forever. Thank you very much to the volunteers who joined us on the day.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March, all pupils at Queen Edith dressed up as animals! Look below at some of our lovely photos.

We all linked our English work to the book Welcome by Barroux. Reception children made their own islands inspired by those in the book. Year 1 designed a welcoming place for the monkeys from the story to stay in. Year 4 wrote inner monologues imagining that they were in that situation. Later Years pupils looked at Welcome and also Leaf, The Day War Came, The Island and The Arrival and found out about refugees around the world before writing diary entries, imagining that they were in that situation.

Year 1

Building castles:

This week year one have been exploring how to build strong structures by designing and creating Mott and Bailey Castles. Lots of skills were used to build these castles- paper mache for the motte, rolling clay to hold up the fences around the bailey and painting the castles. Some people even integrated closing drawbridges into their castles! Fantastic teamwork was displayed by all.

KS1 Christmas Production

KS1 have really enjoyed their Christmas production this year. “The INN-Spectors” was a comical performance with beautiful acting, singing and dancing. Congratulations to all the children for working so hard on learning lines, songs and dance moves. Thanks too to parents who supported the memory challenge and helped children every step of the way. The cast also looked stunning in their costumes, so thanks again to mums and dads for equipping us so well. Our many rehearsals paid off as the final show is one we can all be proud of.

Happy holidays to one and all!

We noticed that today we still play with many of these toys but some people noticed that the materials we use now are different. Some people also noticed that the toys we play with today often use batteries or are plugged in to make them work. We are excited to explore more of these toys and find out other differences about the past.
